Cape Fear Community College. Being at this venue means more space for over fifty exhibitors that will bring us the first look at products and services for the upcoming spring gardening season. This year the Garden Show is truly a one-stop event-it's where the public can find a hint of spring in the displays, the plants and decorative items. In addition, attendees can save time, money and gas by coming to the one event where they will see gardening products, gain information face to face with experts and listen to informative and interesting talks on a variety of topics. Returning favorites as well as new vendors will be on hand for the event. We’re sure there will be something to tempt home gardeners in the Wilmington area.

This weekend is the North Carolina Jazz Festival. They are celebrating their 30th anniversary. This festival of music is Saturday, Feb 6 10:00a
at Hilton Wilmington Riverside, Wilmington, NC
This is a 3 day traditional jazz festival, held at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside Hotel. All events are held in the ballroom in a cabaret setting with tables of ten. The aim of the festival is to preserve and present some of America's original classic music - Jazz - and we feature the style of jazz known as Traditional Jazz.

Also this weekend is the Chocolate Festival to benefit the Senior Citizens center. There will be 30 vendors with all kinds of chocolate confections, music, wine tastings and other goodies. Admission is $ 8.00 and is at the Senior Center on Shipyard and S. College Road... Yum yum

Antique Show and Sale this weekend in Wilmington 10 am to 6 pm Jan 29 and 30, noon - 5 pm Jan 31 at Coastaline Convention Center, 501 Nutt St with more than 35 antique dealers from three states witha large selection of antiques including furniture, primitives, jewelry, linens, silver, glassware, prints and more - sponsored by Junior Sorosis of Wilmington.

Benefit for Haiti at Front Street Brewery tonite Activities include raffe, food and drink specials, and live music. All proceeds will be sent directly to Haiti. Free.

Dredging Happening at Carolina, Wrightsville And The Islands

This weekend while showing property at Carolina and Kure Beaches I noticed the huge waves rolling in. These strong waves are certainly affecting our beaches. They erode away our precious sand which brings tourists and homebuyers to SE NC. However we are certainly lucky that the US Government and the state of North Carolina are involved in providing $ 22 million to dredge and renourish sand on the beaches of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Masonboro Islands. It certainly is needed. Those dredging barges although big and nasty looking are a welcome sight as we know they will add sand and contribute sand to the gorgeous white sandy beaches we enjoy in Southeastern NC.

145 th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher

The roar of canons, gunfire, advancing troops, retreating troops, the smell of bacon and eggs cooking for breakfast at the camps, woman stoking the home fires, children playing alongside - this was the scene at the 145 th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher. After 6 long hours of the battle the north took Fort Fisher and cut off all supplies to the south from the Port of Wilmington. This was a pivotal time for the Civil War and the beginning of the end. The war ended 6 months later. This re-enactment was a realistic view of this battle with hundreds of participants and thousands of viewers. It was amazing to see such a portrayal done right on the grounds of this historic battle.

Cucalorus Film Festival This Week in Wilmington NC

Cucalorus Film Festival starts tommorow in venues all over Wilmington, NC. Over 1000 films were submitted for the 15 year old festival. However 150 made it in the festival. You can buy tickets at the door for most films however the season passes to all films are sold out. Many new movies are featured here including international films. A full schedule of events is available on Cuculorus Film Festival website http://www.cuculorus.org/. Some of these good films are only $ 10.00.

One hugely anticipated movie Precious will be shown during the festival. It will be a good opportunity to see some good indie flicks...
